Newport Pagnell Town 2-1 Eynesbury Rovers
United Counties League Premier
Tuesday 25th August 2015
Willen Road, Newport Pagnell
Manager Darren Lynch rang the changes for the high flying Swans in what was always going to be a tough test against a plucky Eynesbury Rovers side.
A frenetic first twenty minutes saw Rovers have three good chances that could have seen them take an early advantage. The best chance coming with seventeen minutes on the clock was denied by a great block on the edge of the penalty area by Greg Ling. Newport had mustered a half chance eight minutes earlier when the first of many mazy runs down the left wing by Sam O’Neill ended with a cross that was slightly behind front man Josh Crawley.
After twenty five minutes the game began to settle down and Newport’s more patient style of play started to pay dividends and they began to dominate. With 30 minutes gone a beautifully crafted passing move saw Greg Ling, Fazel Koriya, Josh Crawley and Sam O’Neill combine only to see Crawley agonisingly close to getting onto the end of the resulting cross. Two minutes later Ling, Koriya and O’Neill once again exchanged passes with O’Neill’s angled drive almost pushed into the net by Lee Jordan in the Eynesbury goal.
The Swans had further chances from Josh Crawley and Sam O’Neill as the two forwards continued to torment Rover’s defence. Then on thirty eight minutes Tom Coles turned the tables with a classy run and cross only to be thwarted by Newport keeper, Mark Osbourne. With their tails up Eynesbury took full advantage from a Ben Colmer free kick four minutes later, Matt Bannister heading the opening goal of the game to bring the pulsating half to an end.
It did not take Newport long to show their intent and four minutes into the second period Greg Ling robbed Matt Bannister of the ball before riffling it into the net past the advancing Lee Jordan to level the score. The pressure continued to build and it finally told when a sublime one-two between Josh Crawley and Sam O’Neill split the Rover’s defence to allow Crawley to score a stunning goal after fifty eight minutes. Four minutes later Rovers almost restored parity when Chris Stericki drove the ball into the penalty area, the ball cannoned off Lewis Smith forcing a save from Mark Osbourne.
The game became a scrappy affair for the remaining half hour with only two chances of note. Sam O’Neill seized upon a poor back pass only to tangle with Lee Jordan when it seemed odds on that Newport’s lead was about to be extended. With only two minutes left Newport managed to scramble the ball away following an Eynesbury corner.
In summary this was a great result for the Swans, an outstanding performance that showed character and resilience against a useful Eynesbury side.
