Swan’s 2015 Review
The 2014-15 season fizzled to a safe conclusion as the Swan’s ended the campaign in 10th place, an improvement on the previous season’s 16th place finish.
February brought heartbreak when a stoppage time penalty put the Swan’s out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy at the Semi Final stage away to Windsor.
April saw the U18’s narrowly lose the Brian Hitchings Challenge Cup Final 3-2 to Chesham United. The game was played at Chesham’s ground, The Meadow, but it was the young Swan’s who dominated and were unlucky not to come away victorious.
In May there was cup success as the Reserve side won the Suburban League Challenge Plate Final, deservedly beating Westfield 2-0 at Northwood Park, home of Northwood FC.
The Swan’s were unfortunate not to progress in both the FA Cup and the FA Vase this season. A strong performance in the FA Cup Preliminary Round replay against Spartans South Midlands League Premier Division side AFC Dunstable ended in torment as Dunstable snatched victory with a late goal two minutes into added on time. The FA Vase brought disappointment as the Swan’s crashed out against local rivals AFC Kempston Rovers in a game that Newport dominated and should have won.
During the off-season the difficult decision was made to not run a Reserve or U18 team for the 2015-16 season. As a result Darren Lynch’s squad was decimated, he ends the calendar year with only 21 registered players available to him. However, Lynchy and his backroom staff must be applauded for the massive on field improvements made so far this season. Within two years he has transformed a side threatened with relegation into a team that is challenging at the top of the league. The solidarity and positivity shown by the team is staggering, demonstrating that the future is bright.
