Summary

This was a hotly contested match played in sub zero temperatures as the Swan’s avenged their defeat by the Stag’s at the semi final stage last season. Both sides started well but it was the Stag’s who created all the chances in the first twenty minutes. However, they were mainly restricted to long range attempts and free kicks. As the game settled the Swan’s became more dominant and controlled the remainder of the half scoring two goals in the process.

The second half was fairly equal and was full of end to end action. Windsor were unhappy at the awarding of what they considered to be a soft penalty but as soon as there was contact between the defender and attacker the referee was forced to make a decision. The Stag’s quickly responded to score what was to be no more than a consolation goal. They tried hard to get back into the game but failed to put any further telling pressure on the Newport goal.

Manager Darren Lynch would have been looking for a reaction from his players following two disappointing league defeats in recent weeks. This was an excellent performance by Newport against top opposition. The tireless running and hard work of Scott Mulkern and Rob MacDonald was superb and at times the Swan’s were at their fluid best. Jamie Di Giuseppe was outstanding for Windsor and was central to most of their best moves.
