5. NP – Keith Williams robs the ball from Luke Avis but can only manage to find Danny Bircham with his cross-shot. A poor kick from the keeper goes straight to Fazel Koriya who gets no power in his long range shot.

10. NP – A perfect pass from Keith Williams is controlled by Dom Lawless with his chest, who is then denied by a beautifully timed interception by Tom Smith.

21. NP – Dom Lawless makes a chance from nothing but shoots wide of the post.

23. DR – Scott Mooney shoots wide from the edge of the area.

35. DR – Like Avis sends a hard, low drive towards goal, Scott Mulkern is alert to the danger and clears.

38. DR – Adam Pryke clears Luke Avis’ shot from the goal line before David Burton-Jones smashes in the rebound only to be thwarted by Mark Osborn’s tip onto the crossbar and over.

39. DR – Scott Coupland shoots wide from distance.

40. DR – Jonny Clay rises unmarked to head over from a deep corner kick.

42. NP – A sublime free kick from Daryl Smith forces Jonny Clay to head behind to safety.

45+3 Half Time: 0-0

51. DR – Scott Coupland spots Mark Osborn off his line but the keeper manages to touch the ball onto the bar. Will Bird rifles the rebound back onto the post before Adam Pryke manages to clear the Swan’s lines.

64. DR – David Burton-Jones shoots high and wide from thirty yards.

67. NP – GOAL 1-0. An inch perfect through ball from Sam O’Neill puts Dom Lawless clear. Lawless makes no mistake, sliding the ball past Danny Bircham.

76. NP – Good trickery from Dom Lawless gives him space as he shoots high from a tight angle.

84. NP – Greg Ling’s pot shot from distance flies just over the angle of bar and post.

88. NP – Sam O’Neill cracks a shot wide of the target.

90. DR – Spencer Tinkler heads a free kick towards goal. The perfectly positioned Adam Pryke clears the ball at the near post.

90+2. DR – Luke Avis delivers a precision cross for Scott Coupland whose header forces a great save out of Mark Osborn.

90+4 Full Time: 1-0

This proved to be a game that chopped and changed as each side took turns to dominate play for spells before relinquishing possession far too easily. The Swan’s started well, playing some lovely passing football but failed to create any clear cut chances. Deeping looked sluggish and too static as they struggled to get in the game, which was hardly surprising considering that they hadn’t played since February 27th due to postponements. However, after twenty minutes they started to get a foothold as they moved the ball more speedily and were quick to apply pressure whenever possession was lost. They dominated the remainder of the half as it was Newport’s turn to look sluggish.

The deadlock was broken as Dom Lawless ruthlessly finished a classy move. The Swan’s marginally edged control of the second half but had to dig deep and greatly improve their work rate to do so. It was not pretty at times but they got the job done. The back line had to perform at the highest level to deny a determined Rangers side. Beefy Williams and Stuart Smeathers were solid while Scott Mulkern and Adam Pryke worked tirelessly as they both had superb performances. When the defence was breached Mark Osborn was in inspired form to keep a clean sheet.

Deeping will have been disappointed to have left empty handed, just as the Swan’s were at the Haydon Witham Stadium earlier in the season. However, a win and three points apiece from two tight games this season seems appropriate and just rewards for two good footballing sides.
