Summary

The Swans put on a classy display to control the game against a good, in form Tiger’s side. Their passing was crisp and their composure on the ball was a far cry from earlier in the season when possession would have been lost all too easily. They closed down their opponents quickly and competed well for the second ball, denying Holbeach time and space and ultimately a foothold in the game. The performance was all the more impressive as Newport adapted their play to cope with worsening weather conditions whilst not compromising their attractive style of play. By the break they had a commanding and deserved two goal lead.

The pattern of play continued in the second period as the Swan’s increased their lead. However, the status quo dramatically changed with twenty minutes remaining. Holbeach had an extra man following Daryl Smith’s dismissal, allowing the Tiger’s more time on the ball. They pressed well and Sam Coughlan, whose threat had been stifled, started to shine. However, the Swan’s resilient defence stood firm and managed to see the game out, only conceding once.
