Chenecks started the evening looking to follow up on an excellent 0-2 victory away to Peterborough Northern Star in their previous match. The Swan’s had other ideas and started at a blistering pace, putting the ON goal under pressure from the start. They got the breakthrough on eleven minutes when Darryl Smith’s clever run down right flank ended with his rifled shot flicking off a defender on its way to the back of the net. Newport continued to dominate with George Shrieves having an impressive match in midfield as his overall game play continues to develop. The Swan’s had to wait until the last ten minutes of the half to take complete control when Sam O’Neill firmly headed home from a corner to double their lead. Manager Darren Lynch gave a debut to new signing Luke Emery who had been added to the squad to help increase the goal conversion rate from the many chances that Newport create, he proved his worth in the forty first minute when he scored with an unstoppable shot from a tight angle.

After the break Chenecks came out with more determination than they had shown in the first period. The Swan’s defence sat a little too deep which invited Chenecks to push on and they got their reward nine minutes into the half when substitute Luke Tolworthy hammered the ball into the net from the edge of the area. The game became a much more even contest as both sides created half chances but with twenty minutes left Newport stepped up another gear and once again posed a real threat to the ON goal. Dom Lawless was a thorn in the side of the Cheneck’s defence coming close on three occasions before finally scoring in added time.
