Swans Edge Thrilling Cup Tie In Dying Moments

Daventry’s experienced players showed their Premier League pedigree as the United Counties League Division One runaway leaders turned on the style against Newport Pagnell. The Purple Army looked confident as they pressed with a high offensive line, however, Newport stifled their opponent’s attacks time and time again with some resolute defending. The Swan’s also provided a goal threat of their own in a pulsating cut and thrust cup tie and it was the visitors who took an early lead as Dave Baker rose to head Sam O’Neill’s corner into the net. Daventry were patient in their build up play and nineteen minutes after falling behind they were level after a superb free kick by Aaron King was met perfectly by Adam Confue who looped his header over Mark Osborn to equalise.

After the break, it was Daventry who were quick to strike after only three minutes in somewhat fortunate circumstances; as Swan’s keeper Mark Osborn blasted the ball clear it cannoned off defender Dave Baker and back towards goal before James Tricks got the vital touch to turn the game on its head by giving the hosts the lead. Once again, the lead only lasted nineteen minutes before a wonderful run and cross from Darryl Smith gave Greg Ling the opportunity to strike the ball superbly for a scorching goal to bring the sides level once more. The Swans were reduced to ten men on seventy-four minutes as goal scorer Ling was dismissed following a second yellow card. As so often happens the visitors played even better once they were a man short as their players demonstrated a terrific display of team spirit. They were rewarded as the game looked to be going into extra time when Darryl Smith and Dom Lawless combined to release Paul Edgeworth who made no mistake to win the tie for Newport. Although Daventry may have thought that their valiant effort deserved a draw they will not be too dismayed as they turn their attention to gaining promotion.
