Stalemate As Two Unbeaten Runs Continue

League Positions at kick off: 5th vs 6th

This was the first meeting between the Swans and Rangers this season and it promised to be a closely contested affair following the two competitive matches last season where the home side took the honours 1-0 on each occasion that they met. At the start of the day the visitors from Lincolnshire were sitting pretty at the top of the form table with 16 points from their last 6 games, however, neither side had lost a league match since September with the Swans themselves picking up 14 points from their last 6 games. A lively start to the game saw a Dan Schiavi free kick being blasted at the wall before Schiavi struck the rebound sweetly, forcing a flying save out of Martin McIntyre. On fifteen minutes Darryl Smith’s sublime cut back allowed Sam O’Neill to lose his marker and put a slide rule pass in to Dom Lawless who slotted home to give the Swans the lead. The remaining half an hour belonged to the hosts as they dominated possession but failed to capitalise on numerous corner kicks.

Rangers emerged after the break with a much more energetic approach and it only took them 8 minutes to draw level when Charlie Coulson’s inch perfect free kick was headed home by Luke Hunnings. It was now Deepings turn to control the proceedings as Newport sat too deep, inviting their opponents to push forward. Twenty minutes into the half Scott Coupland curled a delightful shot from the edge of the area only to see McIntyre palm the ball to safety, within a couple of minutes McIntyre was at it again as he denied Scott Mooney with an excellent save. With six minutes left a mix up between Richard Stainsby and his defence allowed Lawless the chance to shoot, his first shot was blocked and his second hit the retreating goal keeper on his line. A similar incident in the dying moments allowed Coupland through into the area but once again the defence did enough to preserve the score line. With almost the last kick of the game Newport had a free kick just outside the penalty area, Stainsby gratefully gathered up Lawless’ tame effort. Quite often the plaudits go to the front men and goal scorers, however, it was clear to see why these two teams are in such good form as their defensive units were superb. They more than played their part, not only in breaking up opponent’s attacking moves but also by making themselves readily available to support their own attacking moves, their contribution should not be underestimated.
