Broadfields United’s form has taken an upward turn in recent weeks and they came into this FA Vase 2nd Round match on the back of an unbeaten run of five matches. Although they had only managed to salvage one draw from eight away fixtures in the league they had fared better away from Preston Park in cup competitions, chalking up three victories on the road; against Risborough Rangers and Bicester Town in the Vase and Southall in the Middlesex Premier Cup. The Broadies travelled with confidence having edged a superb home victory by the odd goal in a five-goal thriller against SSML Division One leaders Harpenden Town the previous week.

The Swans got off to a dream start when, in difficult conditions, Ollie Wilkinson’s dangerous cross was missed by two defenders on its way to Sam O’Neill who firmly side footed the hosts into the lead on the three-minute mark. For the next twenty minutes Newport looked confident and threatening, Kieran Jimmy pulled off good saves when Darryl Smith and Dom Lawless looked like they would double the lead. Newport’s luck was out as Dave Baker headed over with the goal beckoning. The tide began to turn and half an hour in Josh Warren’s free kick was cleared by Fazel Koriya. Broadfields’ next attack saw Rex Kimona go on a mazy run to the by-line before pulling the ball back for Billy Smith who saw his shot blocked for a corner. The Swan’s counter attacked as Darryl Smith found Koriya who beat one marker before shooting over the advancing Jimmy and the crossbar. The visitors had one more chance before the break when Warren’s free kick found Billy Smith who had his shot cleared off the line by Baker.

Broadfields came out with the same determination that they had finished the first half and got their reward after sixty-one minutes Warren’s free kick found the head of the unmarked Kimona who made no mistake to draw the scores level. Although Broadfields looked lively it was Newport who carved out the best chances, Jimmy saved from Baker, then at the feet of Lawless as he kept his side in the tie. With fifteen minutes remaining Osborn saved Kimona’s well struck shot from a tight angle. Jimmy once again denied Lawless, palming the ball past the post, Koriya’s corner resulted in a goal mouth melee with Newport having three good attempts before the grateful Jimmy claimed the ball. A minute later Baker had his header cleared off the line, Darryl Smith’s shot from the rebound was saved by Jimmy. The Swans began to turn the screw as Lawless beat one defender before rounding the keeper only to be denied by a superb, last gasp tackle by Jade McCrea. The resultant corner was only cleared as far as Lawless who calmly passed the ball into the net to score what proved to be the winning goal with four minutes left. Newport had some gilt-edged chances, the heroics of the outstanding Jimmy in goal preventing them from scoring more. Broadfields put on an excellent performance and could have easily gone on to win the tie themselves, the whole team played with energy and pace that is to be commended. The Swans made a meal of this tie, however, cup games are all about the result and they are into next round and in so doing extended their unbeaten run to eleven matches in all competitions.
