Corinthians arrived at Willen Road on the back of a superb 0-0 draw away to UCL leaders Peterborough Sports, however, the fact that both the visitors and hosts have seen mixed results in recent weeks made this a hard game to call. The first 20 minutes of the match were fairly even as both sides tentatively felt their way into the game. The contest was sparked into life when Sam O’Neill’s long shot crashed off the crossbar, Dom Lawless failed to keep his follow up down and the ball sailed harmlessly over the bar. Ten minutes later Greg Ling won the ball in midfield and played the perfect through ball to Lawless who made no mistake, managing to stay on his feet following a robust challenge before running on to slot the ball into the net for the opening goal. At this stage of the game there was no indication that the final score line would be so convincing as Rothwell contested every ball, playing with great spirit and energy. Yet, on the stroke of half time Newport doubled their lead when Ben Ford’s teasing corner fell to O’Neill whose lofted shot found its way into the net as a defender desperately attempted to clear the ball on the line.

Rothwell may have considered themselves to have been unfortunate to be two goals behind at the break but the second period belonged to the Swans who started the half in style when Darryl Smith was first to the ball in his own half and proceeded to go on a mazy run, bamboozling five players in the process before providing a classy left foot finish just inside the penalty area that gave Liam Waddy no chance, the Messi-esque wonder goal will surely go on to be the Swans’ goal of the season. Even with a seemingly mountainous task Rothwell kept coming and came close to scoring when Ben Johnson’s corner was headed towards goal by Callum Plowright only to be deflected to safety. Johnson’s resultant corner found Lewis O’Dell who hooked his shot wide of the post. Minutes later Djedje Gomes was denied by a flying Martin McIntyre save. Luke Emery then came close to extending Newport’s lead as his flick went past the post by the narrowest of margins. The visitors bravely searched for a way back into the game and almost found it when Ryan Goodband’s superb ball slipped Moses Rodrigues in but his chip was agonisingly wide of the mark. Within a minute the Swans’ put the contest beyond Rothwell following great work by Emery down the right touchline before putting an inch perfect cross onto the head of Lawless who couldn’t miss from four yards out. This was a comprehensive victory and an assured performance by Newport against a well organised Corinthian’s side. The perfect Christmas present for the Willen Road faithful.
