Swans Progress With Historic Win

Both teams started at a lively pace with plenty of cut and thrust although quality in the final third was scarce during the first half. The first opportunity fell to the Turbines after twenty-five minutes when Mark Jones was tackled by Junior Muya, the ball fell kindly for Avelino Vieira who hit a first time thirty yard shot that glanced off the top of the crossbar. Within minutes the action was down the other end as good work from Sam O’Neill found Dom Lawless unmarked twelve yards out, the Newport striker put his shot agonisingly wide of the mark. Just before the break Vieira broke away wide on the left, with Mark Jones and Josh Moreman waiting in the centre Vieira’s cross was way too deep and it bounced harmlessly off the top of the bar. Newport struggled to clear from the goal kick and the ball broke to Moreman who struck a speculative shot that was comfortably saved by Mark Osborn.

The Swans came out brightly and almost immediately Darryl Smith produced a stinging twenty-five-yard strike that forced Lewis Moat into a good save. The Turbines’ star man, goal machine Vieira was replaced after sixty-seven minutes having been shackled all afternoon by an impeccable defensive display from Adam Pryke. Within minutes Moat was called into action again to save from Lawless and then again from Elliott Sandy’s follow up. Sport’s best player on the day, Moreman, had troubled the Swan’s defence all game with his pace and trickery, however, he was denied by an alert Mark Osborn as the action turned into a classic end to end, blood and guts cup tie. With twenty minutes remaining the tie got the spark it needed when a defensive error presented the ball to Lawless who showed great footwork to create an opportunity, this time he made no mistake as he thundered his shot into the back of the net to open the scoring. The lead only lasted for three minutes before Mark Jones was felled in the penalty area, the striker hammered the resultant penalty down the centre and was relieved to see the ball cross the line after Osborn was desperately unlucky not to keep the spot kick out. The pace and intensity of the game had raised another notch as both sides looked for a winner and with only ten minutes left on the clock Moreman got the goal that his play deserved, picking the ball up on the half way line he outpaced his defender before cutting in and curling the ball beyond the reach of Osborn. However, the Swans were not about to lie down and eighty-five minutes into the contest goalkeeper Osborn advanced up the pitch to take a free kick in the opposition’s half, for the first time in the match the Sport’s defence switched off as Sandy knocked the ball back for Smith to touch home the equaliser. The tie was now on a knife edge, the crowd could sense that the game was destined for a deciding goal as neither side was about to settle for a draw and in a pulsating climax to the game it was left to debutant, Sandy, to grab the winner with a rasping shot. Sports applied pressure in the six minutes of added on time but to no avail, Newport held firm to claim a notable scalp and a place in the last sixteen of the competition.
