Swans & Star Serve Up Score Draw

Star were in dismal form coming into the match, without a win in their previous eight league outings. The Swan’s had not fared much better, only recording two victories in eight league matches having turned their focus towards their recent cup exploits. Nevertheless, it was Newport who had the perfect start to the match when Dan George mishandled Sam O’Neill’s centre leaving Luke Emery with the formality of a tap in to open the scoring after only four minutes. On the half hour mark O’Neill’s corner found the head of Darryl Smith who was denied by George’s wonderful save, tipping the ball over the bar. A few moments later Star came close to an equaliser when Jezz Goldson-Williams’ cross-shot held up and glanced off the cross bar. Sam Wilson put in an assured performance, showing some lovely touches as Star probed for a way back into the match, however, it was not until added time in the first period that they found a way through a resolute Swans defence. Wilkins Makate picked up a loose ball on the edge of the centre circle, Newport’s defenders uncharacteristically stood off him as he ran towards goal before showing great technique to bend the ball past keeper Mark Osborn from twenty-five yards with the outside of his foot to take the sides in level at the break.

Star almost took the lead early in the second half when Adam Pryke’s short back pass left Kieran Blanchard one on one against Osborn, Blanchard struck the ball past the keeper only to see his strike blocked by Pryke who had recovered well to make amends for his error. Mid way through the half Stuart Smeathers tested George as his header from Darryl Smith’s corner was touched round the post by the keeper. The final ten minutes belonged to the Swans as they looked for a late winner. Newport’s recent poor league form coincides with the absence from the team of the influential Liam Smyth who made his first start since early December and it was his free kick that found Pryke in space, great reactions from George saw him palm Pryke’s shot onto the post before gratefully falling on the ball. The keeper was on hand with three minutes left to push Paul Edgeworth’s header round the post and then again in stoppage time he was called on to make two terrific saves in quick succession, firstly from O’Neill’s fierce shot and then from Keith Williams’ sweetly struck effort.
