Mariners Sail Into The Semis

Newport thought they had made the perfect start when Elliott Sandy netted in the first minute, the record 3,161 spectators inside Mariners Park were left stunned before the referee disallowed the goal for handball in the lead up. The Swans lost composure as they contemplated what could have been, South Shields took full advantage when David Foley curled the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the area. With only six minutes on the clock the hosts doubled their lead, Wayne Phillips hitting an unstoppable shot from distance. Keeper Mark Osborn pulled off a good save to deny Craig Baxter but it was only a temporary stay of execution before Dylan Morse added a third as he rose, unopposed, to powerfully head home a corner kick. With only a quarter of the tie played the Mariners asserted total control when Robert Briggs arrowed his shot home from outside the area to give them an unassailable lead.

Newport competed better in the second period and were unfortunate not to pull a goal back in the sixty-third minute when Darryl Smith pounced on a poor back pass, the stranded keeper, Liam Connell, did an excellent job as he managed to get enough on the ball to block Smith’s shot. The Mariners broke down field and within a minute Gavin Gogdon was awarded a penalty, Osborn was inches away from saving as Cogdon got up to convert the spot kick. With twenty minutes left Shields scored again, Andrew Stephenson’s clever flick set Gogdon up to volley his second goal of the match. Newport finally got the reward that their spirit deserved when Sandy Elliott held the ball up in the area before curling the ball past the keeper in the final minute. The outstanding player on the pitch was David Foley, he was superb throughout as his pace, clever movement and slick passing presented a continual threat.

This was a real cup tie, Newport were underdogs versus the Vase favourites, the visitors had nothing to lose having already exceeded their expectations in the competition. Make no mistake, this was always an uphill task for the Swans, there is absolutely no shame in losing to a South Shields side that are more than capable of putting most sides to the sword, they boast a hugely impressive record – this victory was their nineteenth successive victory in all competitions, scoring 75 goals in the process whilst only conceding 14. It was apparent that the vast experience that many of the Shields players have gained at higher levels of the football pyramid gave them a great advantage, they looked fitter, passed quicker and were more mentally alert. However, Newport showed true grit, not one of the player’s heads dropped as they fought to the end. They say that you learn more in defeat than in victory and the players will have learned a lot during this reverse. They left Mariners Park with many positives and a whole host of great memories and should be extremely proud of their run to the last 8 of the competition.
