Swans Bounce Back To Winning Ways

Darren Lynch was looking for a positive reaction following the weekend’s cup exit and he got it as the Swans set out to prove that their season still has plenty of life. The players came out with purpose against an in-form Desborough side who were unbeaten in eleven league matches, elevating them to third in the table. After fifteen minutes Chris Jones did well to push away Darryl Smith’s twenty-five-yard free kick. Then Smith flicked a Remy Forrester corner on to Stuart Smeathers who had his shot blocked at close range, four minutes later Smeathers was not to be denied as a carbon copy set piece saw the Swans Captain put his team in the lead. Ar Tarn tried to respond, however, John Dean and then Dan Grainger were restricted to long range efforts that were struck straight at keeper Mark Osborn. Ten minutes before the break Newport produced the best passing move of the match as Ollie Wilkinson, Smith and Elliott Sandy combined beautifully before Jones was quick off his line to save at the feet of Sandy. Smith attempted to extend the visitor’s lead with a lob from thirty yards that managed to clear the keeper and the cross bar. Desborough were left frustrated as Adam Pryke superbly blocked John’s shot to preserve the Swans lead at the break.

After the break, Desborough raised their game, they were full of running and competed for every ball in the second period as they showed exactly why they been in such great form recently. Newport were not to be outdone as they increased the intensity of their game to match that of the hosts, each side had a couple of half chances but it was not until the game had twenty minutes remaining that Ar Tarn posed any real threat to the Newport goal. First Grainger saw his twenty-yard free kick sail harmlessly over the cross bar, then in the final minute a deep free kick found Aidan Bradshaw in space on the edge of the six-yard box, a poor first touch allowed Greg Ling the opportunity to clear the danger. Into added on time Louis Martin hit a fierce shot from just outside the penalty area that was blocked by Smeathers as Newport recorded a notable scalp as they returned to winning ways.
