Super Sub Emery’s Hat-trick Secures Win

The Poachers took an early lead after just five minutes when Carlton Beardmore thumped the ball across the goal from twenty-five yards to give Mark Osborn no chance as he opened the scoring. Newport came close to an equaliser when a mix up in defence left keeper Sam Lomax stranded outside the penalty area, Sam O’Neill’s lob agonisingly cleared the bar by inches. Then it was Oadby’s turn as they almost doubled their lead when Jacob Gill put in a deep cross that was flicked on by Harry Alcock to Beardmore who placed his header wide. For all the huff and puff the remainder of the half provided little in the way of quality goalmouth action; the difficult conditions and heavy pitch made slick passing moves virtually impossible as the game turned into a war of attrition.

The Swans started more quickly in the second half, in the opening minutes O’Neill put in a beautiful cross-field pass for Dom Lawless who flicked the ball just wide of the upright. In a blistering two-minute onslaught the game was turned on its head as Greg Ling smashed the ball against the post with Ollie Wilkinson following up to score from the rebound to restore parity. Then Wilkinson turned provider as he found Elliott Sandy in space, Sandy produced an exquisite chip over Lomax to give the visitors the lead. With twenty minutes remaining Beardmore had a glorious chance to draw the scores level when he found himself in the clear thirty yards from goal, as he advanced he drew the keeper off his line only to lob the ball wide of the mark after having done all the hard work. Newport had stepped up a gear and their third goal came when Sandy headed on for Luke Emery, Lomax saved with his feet and then saved the follow up from Darryl Smith, however, the ball was only cleared as far as Ling, his perfectly weighted through ball allowed Emery the time and space to coolly slot the ball into the back of the net. With two-minutes on the clock Smith’s corner was headed back across goal by Dave Baker for Emery to hook the ball over the line for his second. In added on time Smith made a superb run from midfield to the goal line before laying the ball back for substitute Emery who gratefully tapped home to complete his hat-trick.
