Baker Brace Brings Home The Points

The Arrows received a boost before the game with the news that Luke Emery had departed the Swans for Biggleswade Town but after only five minutes Dave Baker headed the visitors ahead from Liam Smyth’s free kick. It was not long before the Swan’s came close to doubling their lead when Dom Lawless set up Elliott Sandy who was denied when Chris Bennett touched the ball past the post with a good save. The resultant corner was only cleared as far as Sam O’Neill, Bennett again produced a fine save tipping O’Neill’s curling shot round the upright. The Swan’s increased the pressure as Keith Williams’ corner found the head of Baker, this time his effort was high of the mark. It looked as if the hosts were in for a long afternoon when, after eighteen minutes, Baker grabbed his second with a carbon copy of his first, heading home a Smyth free kick. However, Harrowby had other ideas, within a minute they offered their first sortie forward when John Currall headed a deep cross over the bar. Then, ten minutes before the break they pulled a goal back after a defensive error, Ben Sharpe’s long free kick found its way to Matt Clarke after an attempted clearance was horribly sliced straight to the striker who gratefully knocked the ball over the line. On the stroke of half time Stuart Smeathers released Lawless, Nick Eatough did well to block Lawless’ fierce shot.

The second period was a patchy, cantankerous affair as both sides were lacking in any great quality of play. It had become a war of attrition as Newport were made to work hard with Harrowby looking to punish them on the break, although, most of the Arrow’s attacking moves were snuffed out before they reached the final third. The visitors appeared to want to over play the ball in front of goal when an early shot may have proved more prudent, however, they did manage to muster a few half chances. Lawless had a shot deflected over the bar and Baker once again rose unopposed to head the ball across the face of the goal, this time to no avail. Darryl Smith came closest to scoring when his header from a Williams corner glanced the post. In the dying moments, Sandy had a shot brilliantly blocked by Ben Sharpe. This was Newport’s fifth consecutive win with four of those victories coming away from Willen Road. Next up is a home match against a Yaxley side that were the last team to beat the Swans in the league when the sides met in January.
