Emery Is The Pinball Wizard

Both sides came into this encounter having shown good form in recent weeks but it was a buoyant Newport Pagnell who came out on top as Rangers suffered their first league home reverse of the season. Rangers looked more dangerous in the first half as they almost took the lead after eleven minutes after the ball fell to David Burton-Jones who fired in a low shot across goal, Ollie Wilkinson was in the right place to clear the ball off the goal line. Ranger’s excellent defensive display limited the Swans strike force to feeding off scraps, while the hosts themselves only managed to carve out half chances. Dan Schiavi’s free kick found the head of Jack Cotton but his header lacked power as Mark Osborn comfortably saved. Scott Coupland found himself racing clear only to be denied by the advancing Osborn. Charlie Coulson and Daniel Flack combined well on the stroke of half time, however, the final shot was too weak as it bobbled through to a grateful Osborn.

Newport were a different team in the second period, showing greater hunger and intensity as they went through the gears. It didn’t take long for Luke Emery to register on the score sheet, the match resembled a pinball game as first Remy Forrester hit the left-hand post, then Wilkinson smashed the rebound against the other upright, eventually Emery took control as he drove the ball into the roof of the net. Rangers look stunned and the Swans capitalised when Elliott Sandy released Forrester who in turn squared the ball for the unmarked Emery to side foot his second of the match and ninth goal in the last three matches. Deeping tried to get themselves back into the contest but the well organised Newport defence stood firm. With nine minutes remaining substitute Tom Waumsley produced a delicious flick that went wide of the post, within a minute Coupland lobbed the ball and forced a lovely fingertip save out of Osborn. Dom Lawless had two golden chances to wrap up the points in added on time, the first saw him knock the ball past keeper Richard Stainsby, great covering from Tom Smith forced Lawless to drive his shot across the face of the goal and narrowly wide. The second saw Lawless win a foot race against Flack before placing his shot agonisingly wide of the target.
