Swans Set Up Local Derby

The Swans made a quick start in this all UCL Emirates FA Cup tie, with the first move of the game Taylor Orosz latched onto a long ball and ran on before firing over the bar. The home side failed to clear the half way line as Newport pressed forward, Tom Liversledge’s long range effort was caught by Tom Smith in the Huntingdon goal. It did not take the Swans long before they mounted another attack, Liversedge looked as if he was being pulled back as he broke through but the striker showed good strength to stay on his feet before stroking the visitors into a third minute lead. The host’s defence looked shaky but managed to hold firm as Fazel Koriya and Orosz were denied before Koriya had another attempt cleared off the line by Odie Wason. Huntingdon showed glimmers of hope as Liam Rodden and Richard Baines combined well, however, Ollie Wilkinson put in a commanding performance in defence, not allowing Huntingdon to get a foothold in the game. It was not until twenty minutes had been played that Huntingdon mustered their first serious attack, resulting in Mark Osborn getting down well to save Chris Down’s thirty-yard free kick. A superb run down the line by Sam O’Neill saw him slip the ball to Koriya who wrong footed his marker, allowing him the space and time to place his shot past the keeper to double the lead after thirty minutes. The Huntingdon defence did their best to keep things tight at the back but Newport’s movement was simply too good when Jordan Spruce broke down the left just before the break, Koriya was on hand once again to run on and calmly score his second.

Huntingdon came out for the second half with a lot more purpose than they had showed in the first period and within a couple of minutes Down was allowed too much space as he saw his header go agonisingly the wrong side of the post. The Swans still posed a threat as O’Neill and Koriya combined well, Koriya was unlucky to see his effort deflected onto the crossbar and away to safety. George Shrieves played a clever chip to set up O’Neill who shot narrowly wide. The game became more stretched and with twenty minutes remaining as Down struck the ball over the bar for the home side. Koriya missed the chance to complete his hatrick when his free kick from the edge of the area sailed inches over. The action was now end to end as James Seymour made a rare appearance in the Newport penalty area, his fine run ending with a shot that was wide of the mark. Huntingdon were becoming more confident and some lovely build up play was rewarded with a tidy finish from the edge of the area from Antonio Dello Russo to pull a goal back with fifteen minutes remaining. The goal sparked some life back into the Swans and it was a towering headed Yaw Ofosu goal from a Koriya corner that finally ended any hopes of a Huntingdon comeback. The victory means Newport will now play local rivals, Kempston Rovers, at Willen Road (MK16 0DF) on the 19th August in the Preliminary Round.
