Swans Secure Three Vital Points

The Swans gave their supporters the perfect present in their last home game before Christmas as they took all three points from their encounter with Eynesbury Rovers. However, it was Rovers who started more quickly and Rob Ducket thought he had put his side in front in the ninth minute but an early flag from the assistant referee ruled the goal out for offside. The visitors settled more quickly and came close again when Jack Uttridge pumped the ball forward, Steve Gentle headed on to Rob Ducket who tested Mark Osborn with a fierce shot. Dom Lawless had a glorious chance to put Rovers in front, however, he managed to shoot over the bar from nine-yards with the goal beckoning. Newport broke quickly, went straight down the other end, Fazel Koriya squared the ball for Tom Liversedge who made no mistake, rifling the ball home to open the scoring. The Swans had their best period of the game as they began to hold the balance of play. Just past the half hour mark Damon Herbert put a delicious cross into the box for Stuart Smeathers who smacked his header against the post. Rovers scrambled the ball clear but before they could fully regain their composure Josh Winters set up Koriya who side footed his sixteenth league goal of the season to double the lead. Within a couple of minutes Eynesbury were left fuming after their player was clearly upended inside the box, however, the referee waved away their claims as he awarded a free kick outside the area. Dan Draper struck a late free kick straight into the arms of Mark Osborn as the visitors tried to get a foothold into the game.

Koriya Fazel 2

Fazel Koriya, 20 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.

Eynesbury came out for the second period with a new determination and almost immediately Rob Ducket forced a good save out of Osborn. Newport appeared to be sitting too deep, which allowed Rovers time and space to launch themselves forward. Osborn did well to touch the ball over the bar from a corner before a calamitous mix up in the Swan’s defence allowed Craig Smith to get on to the end of Uttridge’s through ball and to run the ball into an empty net. Eynesbury could not keep up the pressure, gaps started to appear at the back as they pushed for an equaliser and the game was all but over when Newport exploited the space on offer to create the best move of the game that culminated in Koriya flicking on Liversedge’s pass for Harry Stratton who calmly restored Newport’s two goal lead. Uttridge flashed a shot across the face of goal as the home side defended superbly. With eight minutes remaining it was Newport who had a nailed-on penalty claim denied when Taylor Orosz was flattened in the penalty area, the referee chose to ignore his assistant’s flag and waved play on. In a frantic end to the game both sides had half chances without troubling either keeper. Rovers had a great chance to score in the dying moments of the match, Gentle played the ball in to the box and just as Dom Lawless was about to score he was denied by an outstanding interception from Herbert.

St Andrews Put To The Sword

Newport were straight onto the front foot when, in the first minute, Harry Stratton passed from the left wing to Taylor Orosz who set up Josh Winters who volleyed wide. Ryan Elliott claimed a Luke Emery header before St Andrews broke away, Lewis Turland picked the ball up in midfield, turning and shooting over from twenty-five-yards. The Swans opened the scoring when Stratton found Emery in space, he side stepped the keeper before finishing from close range. Newport were looking dangerous up front, however, they failed to capitalise when Alex Marius and Fazel Koriya had shots blocked as the St Andrews’ defence threw their bodies on the line time and time again. In a frantic period towards the end of the half, Stratton forced a good save out of Elliott and Marius struck the ball wide of the mark. St Andrews responded, Matthew Baird breaking into the penalty area and squaring the ball to Kyrie Foster who hit his shot straight at Mark Osborn. Orosz came close to doubling the lead in the dying moments when his shot was blocked, he was first to the rebound only to be denied by a full-length diving save from Elliott at the far post.

It took the Swans less than ten minutes to double their lead, Emery’s low shot across goal evaded Elliott’s grasp as it went in off the post. Within three minutes they put the result beyond doubt, Emery went on a mazy run, beating three players before crossing the ball for Koriya to tap in the host’s third goal. Almost straight from the restart, Newport won the ball, Koriya chased a through ball but Elliott was alert and was quickly out to avert the danger. In a carbon copy incident, Foster broke from midfield for the visitors, only to be denied as Osborn advanced quickly to save at the striker’s feet. The final goal capped a period of lovely football from the Swans as they crisply passed the ball around the park, the move ending with a pin point Ollie Wilkinson centre that Emery rose majestically to powerfully head home, completing his hatrick in the process.

Cool Koriya Spot On

Newport looked sluggish in the opening minutes of the match and Oadby looked like they would advantage when Lamar Parkes broke into the penalty area in the third minute only to be body checked by Stuart Smeathers, the referee waved away shouts for a penalty as the ball drifted harmlessly behind. Josh Winters provided the first chance for the Swans when he tested Tom Hubbard with a stinging twenty-five-yard free kick, the keeper, diving to his left pushed the ball to safety. The game quickly settled into a fast-paced, end to end contest as Keaton Towers sent a free kick into the area for the visitors, only to see Parkes head wide of the mark. Greg Ling’s perfectly weighted through ball found Luke Emery who was denied by a good save from Hubbard. From the clearance, Carlton Beardmore broke away and forced a save out of Mark Osborn at the other end. Harry Stratton then put in a top quality cross for the unmarked Tom Liversedge who volleyed his shot over the bar. It was the Poacher’s turn to attack and this time Parkes set up Luke Shaw who’s thunderous shot was well blocked by Dave Baker, however, the Swans failed to clear the ball, allowing Parkes too much room as he scored with a sweetly struck shot from thirty yards. Within seven minutes the home side were awarded a penalty when Kieran Hefford gave the referee an easy decision, clearly handling the ball inside the box. Fazel Koriya showed great patience as the opposition did their best to put him off before calmly firing the spot-kick high to the keeper’s right to level the scores. Parity only lasted five minutes before Josh Walsh took advantage of some lazy defending by the home side to slip the outstanding Parkes in to score his second of the match and for the first time in the league this season the Swans found themselves behind at the break.

The second half was a much more one sided affair as Newport came out showing more determination as they tore open the Oadby defence in the opening minutes, Emery, Stratton and Koriya combining beautifully resulting in Koriya’s shot going just past the post. Oadby seemed more jaded after the break and only managed one meaningful attack when Jonathon Berarey headed Aniyah King’s free-kick wide of the mark. The Swans pushed for an equaliser with Emery and Smeathers coming close. They had to wait until the sixty-eighth minute when King hacked Stratton down in the area, Koriya, once again, coolly converted the penalty kick. The Poachers defence were sitting deeper and deeper as Newport increased the pressure, hemming them in in their own half of the pitch. The Swans persistence eventually paid off when Ollie Wilkinson’s free-kick was headed back across goal, Adam Pryke anticipated well as he stole between the static defenders to poke the ball home for the winning goal.

Seven Up Swans

Newport went into the match with a 100% record in the league, in contrast, Wanderers had only scored one goal in their four league defeats and were without a point so far, this season. This was always going to be a difficult task for Wanderers and the mission became even more unlikely as they only managed to field ten players. Within two minutes Jordan Spruce set up Chris Wreh who rounded the keeper to open the scoring. It was the visitors who had the next opportunity to score when Taylor Wilson chanced his arm from thirty-yards, keeper Jonny Thick got an early touch as he calmly claimed the ball. The Swans continued to have large amounts of possession without threatening the Burton goal until Jordan Spruce smashed home their second following a Fazel Koriya corner. Wanderers came close to pulling a goal back when a free kick found its way to Christopher Hull who struck the post. Newport broke down the other end and Greg Ling played Koriya in, the striker stroking the ball home to make it three nil. George Shrieves had a fantastic driving run beating four players before shooting across the face of goal and Taylor Orosz stung the fingers of Devon Ward with a fierce shot. It was Shrieves who tested the keeper once more, Ward pulling off a good stop only to see Wreh follow up to add his second of the half.

The second period started in the same fashion that the first had ended with Wreh tapping home a Josh Winters’ centre to complete his hattrick. For all Newport’s possession Wanderers worked hard and pressed their opponents well, James Payne broke clear only to be denied by the advancing Thick who was quick to come out to make the tackle. Ward then denied Orosz twice in quick succession before executing a wonderful point blank save to deny a certain goal from the head of Sam O’Neill. In the best move of the match Wreh controlled a beautifully weighted pass from Harry Stratton before picking his spot to score his fourth and Newport’s sixth of the evening. Burton demonstrated unbelievable spirit as they played the final twenty-two minutes with nine men after Karl White was forced to leave the pitch with an injury. With five minutes remaining they almost got on the score sheet when Jordon Harvey tried to lob the keeper, having had long periods with nothing to do Thick showed great alertness and concentration to pluck the ball out of the air just beneath his crossbar. The Swans capped off their performance when Winters slid the ball through to Orosz who slotted home the final goal. This was a valiant effort by the visitors and at no point did the Wanderer’s heads drop, they maintained a high work rate and gave a spirited performance in the face of adversity. Ward’s fine performance in goal deserves special mention.

Newport’s victory means that they will now host Rothwell Corinthians in the First Round. The tie is scheduled to be played on 12th September.

Swans Edge Seven Goal Thriller

Until the opening goal the game was well balanced as both teams traded good moves, probing for a breakthrough, however, once Newport got their noses in front they went on to dominate the remainder of the half as Josh Winters controlled proceedings. The opening goal came following a lovely passage of play as Tom Liversedge collected Stuart Smeathers’ through ball then, in one move, laid a delicious pass to Taylor Orosz who finished the move clinically. It did not take the Swans long to threaten the Kirby goal again as Greg Ling’s shot deflected off Prince Nyarko forcing a superb save out of Warren Butlin. Once again, Liversedge played a big part in the second goal, delicately flicking on Jordan Spruce’s pass, this time for Winters to side foot home. The Swans rampaged forward at will, easily by-passing Kirby’s high, flat defensive line and with ten minutes remaining in the half Fazel Koriya latched on to Ollie Wilkinson’s pass, he beat one defender before squaring the ball for Liversedge who gratefully smashed the ball home. The fourth goal was a carbon copy of the third, Koriya squaring from the left for Liversedge to grab his second.

Muxloe changed their formation and rearranged their back line for the second period, instantly they looked better organised, allowing them more space and time on the ball. Time and time again substitute Aiden Black began to find gaps as he ran at the Newport defence but, as with the first half, the game was even until twenty minutes in when Black beat three players before rounding the keeper to slot the ball into the back of the net. The momentum was now with Kirby, they had taken the upper hand and had complete control, within five minutes of their first goal Black broke through the Swans defence all too easily before slipping the ball to Dan Agar who calmly netted the second goal. Kirby continued to ask questions but Newport’s back line held firm. Chris Wreh was denied by a great save from Butlin as Newport showed they still posed a threat on the break. Time was running out for the visitors when Black combined with Josh Burniston to set up Agar who was thwarted by a superb save by Jonny Thick, however, the resultant corner was met on the half volley by Agar who made no mistake from twelve yards to score his second and set up a frantic final few minutes. In the final moments of normal time a mess up in the Swans defence allowed Charles Butler to head the ball against the post and away to safety. Newport held out well and it was Winters who had the final touch when his free kick forced a fine save out of Butlin with the final touch of the game. After the match, Swan’s manager, Darren Lynch said, “I must admit for the first time in my managerial career I’m thankful that my side had the rub of the green with decisions. We were lucky to come away with three points today and Kirby will feel very hard done by not to get at least a draw”.

Swans Get Season Off To A Winning Start

It did not take the Swans long to pick up where they had left off following their Emirates FA Cup victory over Huntingdon Town. Within five minutes Fazel Koriya threaded the ball through to Tom Liversedge who could only manage to shoot straight at Ollie Reynolds in the Sileby goal. Newport continued to apply pressure as they took control of the game, however, they lacked the final touch to convert their possession into goals. Sam O’Neill, Alex Marius and Liversedge combined well, only to be thwarted by Reynolds who was then called upon to claw out Koriya’s goal bound corner. It looked as if lady luck had deserted the home side when Liversedge brilliantly flicked his header on to Koriya who had his shot saved by Reynolds, Taylor Orosz put the ball back in for Koriya who managed to clear the crossbar from close range. Alex Marius, Orosz and O’Neill all had good chances before Rangers mounted their first attempt on the Newport goal when Jory Mann hit a tame shot straight to Mark Osborn with ten minutes of the half remaining. The thirty-eighth minute saw a bizarre twist when Colum Nugent headed Orosz’s cross towards his own goal, the ball somehow evaded the keeper to give the Swans a somewhat fortunate goal but well deserved lead. Sileby rallied as Collins Antubrah and Stephen Grimley had long range efforts comfortably dealt with by Osborn. In the final minute of the half Reynolds produced a fantastic save to deny O’Neill not once but twice, however, Newport were not to be denied as Yaw Ofosu’s pass split the defence to leave Koriya in space and bearing down on goal, this time the striker made no mistake as he calmly slotted home to double the lead at the break.

Newport started the second half in the same manner that they had finished the first as Koriya set up Orosz who was unable to beat Reynolds at the near post. The hosts looked dangerous as they pushed to extend their lead but Sileby showed more hunger in the second period as Grimley and Dylan Panter held the Swans wingers at bay. Rangers started to have more threat going forward as Nathaniel Ansu’s deflected shot curled narrowly past the post and Mann directed his strike into Osborn’s hands. At the other end Orosz continued to run amok as he saw a couple of shots sail wide of the mark, he then broke free to put a pin point cross onto the head of Liversedge who struck the post with his header. Within a minute Jordan Spruce sent a deep free kick into the area and it was Orosz who rose to head the ball powerfully past Reynolds to extend the lead with fifteen minutes left. James Elkington-Soan latched onto a through ball as the game entered its final stages, he side footed the keeper before passing the ball into the back of the net for a consolation Sileby goal. Considering the amount of rain that had fallen in the previous twenty-four hours this was an entertaining affair for the brave souls who endured the cold blustery conditions, and as for players wearing gloves in August… welcome to the British summer!

Swans Make Hay In The Spring Sunshine

Newport recorded their first ever victory over Nirvana side in emphatic style, scoring six against their visitors without reply. They could not have got off to a better start at a sun drenched Willen Road when they took an early lead after Arjuna Govia failed to collect Liam Smyth’s cross, Gary Brook was on hand to gratefully knock in the opening goal from close range after only four minutes. The home side doubled their lead with twenty-one minutes on the clock when a Keith Williams free kick was headed towards goal by Dave Baker, Govia made a good save but could only manage to parry the ball to Elliott Sandy who made no mistake with his header. Five minutes later Smyth superbly released Sam O’Neill who was wiped out by the advancing keeper, Dom Lawless stepped up to calmly convert the resultant penalty. Newport began to turn on the style and it was not long before Govia was called into action once again, this time diving to his left to produce a good save from Sandy’s low, hard shot as the Swans threatened to run riot. Nirvana produced their first real attempt on the Swan’s goal just before half time when Jurelle Phillip had his long range shot blocked, the striker was first to the loose ball and was again frustrated as his second effort was also blocked.

Dom Lawless scores from the spot

Newport picked up where they had left off after the break, taking only eight minutes to stretch their lead when Sean Phillips sliced his clearance straight to Lawless who mercilessly rifled his shot into the back of the net. On a rare venture forward Nirvana found some space with a well worked move that ended in Yaegan Gore’s strike being saved by the outstretched leg of Mark Osborn. However, it was only a stay of execution as Lawless scored a fine individual goal, beating three players before beating the keeper with a lovely finish from the edge of the area to claim his hat trick. Three minutes later dogged determination in midfield from Smyth saw him stab the ball through to O’Neill who had the relatively easy task of stroking home the Swan’s sixth goal. Substitutes Shaquille Master and Will Gonga had half chances to give Nirvana a consolation goal in the final ten minutes but neither managed to trouble Osborn’s goal. The Swans defence held firm to record a clean sheet as they came close to scoring another goal when Lawless saw his effort cleared off the line by Gore. The final chance of the afternoon fell to Lawless, Govia did well to tip the striker’s late shot past the post. This was a setback for Nirvana who had named a largely young and inexperienced side as they continue to rebuild their squad, the Swans had too much experience on the day as they controlled the game from the first minute to the last without ever needing to get out of first gear.

Cuckoos At The Double

This was a contest between two of the League’s in-form teams and it was Yaxley who came out on top to complete the league double over the home side, winning by the same margin as in the previous meeting in January. The hosts had a selection headache prior to the match as they were forced into a number changes with Mason Coleman and Taigan Brooks making their first appearances for the Swans first team this season. After five minutes Elliott Sandy’s half-volley forced a save out of visiting keeper Ollie Sutton. Shortly after Dan Cotton fired over for the Cuckoos after picking up a loose ball. Both sides were reduced to half chances, Darryl Smith headed Sam O’Neill’s corner onto the roof of the net for the Swans and Wayne Norris rose to head a Cotton free kick wide of the mark for Yaxley as the sides struggled to break each other down. The crowd witnessed a poor half of football with Sandy’s early shot the only effort on target during the first period.

After the break Yaxley came out with more energy as Newport started to look a little jaded. Cotton blasted his shot wide after having been played in by Joe Butterworth, the resultant goal kick was poorly cleared and Matt Sparrow found himself alone on the edge of the six-yard box, his shot flew across the area with the goal beckoning. It wasn’t long before another hashed clearance fell straight to Liam Hook, this time the ball was smashed into the net off a stricken defender to open the scoring. Ten minutes later Newport were caught on the break, the Cuckoos doubled their lead as Sparrow squared the ball for Kyle Norton to side foot home. The Swans responded well, within a minute Dom Lawless laid the ball back for Smith who failed to keep his shot down. Norris threw his body on the line to superbly block O’Neill’s driven shot. Yaxley then squandered two golden opportunities to put the game out of sight, the first saw Sparrow denied from three yards out by a wonderful point blank save by Mark Osborn. Then Sparrow latched onto a through ball, he raced on to fire away a shot that was once again well saved by Osborn, the loose ball fell to Phil Stebbing who only had to slot the ball into the open net but somehow managed to find the side netting. Newport had two late Liam Smyth free kicks that found their intended targets but neither header troubled Sutton.

Emery Hits Four To Sink Sileby

Newport took an early lead at a rain soaked Willen Road and it was Saturday’s goal hero Luke Emery who opened the scoring neatly trapping a Remy Forrester corner before turning to fire home in one motion. When Darryl Smith’s free kick crashed against the upright, it was Emery who was on hand to follow up to double the lead. Smith almost got in on the act again when he headed Forrester’s corner powerfully towards goal but alert defending on the line saw the ball cleared to avert the danger. With only eighteen minutes on the clock Emery was upended in the penalty area, converting the spot kick himself to complete his second hat-trick in four days. Newport threatened to run riot as they played with great purpose, they attacked in waves, their slick passing allowing the ball to do the work in extremely difficult conditions. However, Sileby stood firm as James Goff pulled off the first of a string of good saves to deny Sam O’Neill. Goff was called on again soon after to make a wonderful flying save to prevent an Elliott Sandy goal. Sandy was frustrated once again as Harry Osborne blocked a thunderous shot. Rangers did not manage to muster a meaningful attack until the thirty-seventh minute, Swans keeper Mark Osborn made a stunning point blank save when it looked certain that Brian Farrell was about to score for the visitors. On the stroke of half time Osborn showed good hands to save a Michael Byrne free kick.

Goff made another good save early in the second period after Emery and Sandy combined well to set up Smith. Luke Stevens shooting wide from outside the area and Lewis Burgess testing Osborn from thirty yards demonstrated that Sileby were going to compete better after the break and the introduction of Nathaniel Ansu provided a new dimension to Sileby’s play. Newport continued to press and pass well and Smith showed some sublime skills, twisting and turning before curling his shot narrowly over the bar. Dom Lawless was full of running as he raced down the touchline to put a pin point cross onto the head of Emery, Goff saved the initial attempt but could not prevent Emery helping himself to his fourth goal of the night. Rangers came close to a goal when Ansu knocked the ball past Osborn only to see Ollie Wilkinson clear his goal bound shot. Smith then added a fifth as his well struck shot proved too strong for Goff who managed to get a hand to the ball but could not stop it crossing the line. Within a minute the scoring was completed when Lawless chased a through ball, his persistence paying off as he managed to net the Swan’s sixth. Deep into added on time Dave Baker was dismissed and Luke Stevens blasted the resultant free kick over the bar.

Swans & Bees Can’t Be Separated

Once again injury decimated the Newport line up as four or five regulars were missing, those who did play had their work cut out against a hardworking, well organised Harborough team. The Bees took the lead on seventeen minutes when captain Ben Williams drilled the ball hard and low into the back of the net from Jack Sutherland’s corner. Newport came close to replying on the half hour mark when Elliott Sandy glanced Remy Forrester’s free kick straight to keeper Glen Giles. A few minutes later Bee’s frontman Barnes Gladman found himself in the clear as he forced a great reaction save from Mark Osborn. The action was now end to end and the Swan’s equaliser came from a set piece, Dave Baker was on the end of Forrester’s corner, powering his header into the roof of the net. However, Harborough managed to get their noses in front just before the break when the ball was flicked on to Gladman who took one touch before striking past the outstretched arm of keeper Osborn to score.

The Swans came out strongly and dominated the opening exchanges of the second half, Giles denying Sandy with a superb double save. The hosts were attacking in waves and a minute later found themselves level when Ollie Wilkinson released Dom Lawless who was initially denied by Giles, Lawless made no mistake with his second attempt as he smashed the loose ball across the face of the goal to restore parity for a second time. Following the goal the game became disjointed and a little fractious as both sides probed for a winner. With fifteen minutes left Gladman had a golden opportunity to settle the match, one on one with the keeper his shot was wide of the mark. Into the final ten minutes and Giles was once again on hand to deny the Swans with another brilliant double save, this time denying Kelvin Osei-Addo.
