Swans Make Hay In The Spring Sunshine

Newport recorded their first ever victory over Nirvana side in emphatic style, scoring six against their visitors without reply. They could not have got off to a better start at a sun drenched Willen Road when they took an early lead after Arjuna Govia failed to collect Liam Smyth’s cross, Gary Brook was on hand to gratefully knock in the opening goal from close range after only four minutes. The home side doubled their lead with twenty-one minutes on the clock when a Keith Williams free kick was headed towards goal by Dave Baker, Govia made a good save but could only manage to parry the ball to Elliott Sandy who made no mistake with his header. Five minutes later Smyth superbly released Sam O’Neill who was wiped out by the advancing keeper, Dom Lawless stepped up to calmly convert the resultant penalty. Newport began to turn on the style and it was not long before Govia was called into action once again, this time diving to his left to produce a good save from Sandy’s low, hard shot as the Swans threatened to run riot. Nirvana produced their first real attempt on the Swan’s goal just before half time when Jurelle Phillip had his long range shot blocked, the striker was first to the loose ball and was again frustrated as his second effort was also blocked.

Dom Lawless scores from the spot

Newport picked up where they had left off after the break, taking only eight minutes to stretch their lead when Sean Phillips sliced his clearance straight to Lawless who mercilessly rifled his shot into the back of the net. On a rare venture forward Nirvana found some space with a well worked move that ended in Yaegan Gore’s strike being saved by the outstretched leg of Mark Osborn. However, it was only a stay of execution as Lawless scored a fine individual goal, beating three players before beating the keeper with a lovely finish from the edge of the area to claim his hat trick. Three minutes later dogged determination in midfield from Smyth saw him stab the ball through to O’Neill who had the relatively easy task of stroking home the Swan’s sixth goal. Substitutes Shaquille Master and Will Gonga had half chances to give Nirvana a consolation goal in the final ten minutes but neither managed to trouble Osborn’s goal. The Swans defence held firm to record a clean sheet as they came close to scoring another goal when Lawless saw his effort cleared off the line by Gore. The final chance of the afternoon fell to Lawless, Govia did well to tip the striker’s late shot past the post. This was a setback for Nirvana who had named a largely young and inexperienced side as they continue to rebuild their squad, the Swans had too much experience on the day as they controlled the game from the first minute to the last without ever needing to get out of first gear.

A minute’s silence was impeccably observed before the match to mark the untimely passing of UCL administrator Jeremy Biggs.

The Swans’ long unbeaten run, stretching back to September, was ripped to shreds by the hosts. The visitors were sluggish to start and didn’t manage to mount a meaningful attack until the twenty second minute. By then it was already too late as the home side had raced to a two goal lead. First Suleiman Nassor and then James Bessey-Saldanha calmly slotted the ball past keeper Mark Osborn and Newport’s dismal record of losing every game that they have ever played against Nirvana looked set to continue. The Swans’ luck appeared to be changing as Luke Emery knocked the ball past Aaron Harris to pull a goal back but what hope Newport had of drawing level before half time evaporated eight minutes later when Bessey-Saldanha hit a hard, low shot to score his second goal of the game.

Luke Emery scores for the Swans

The second half struggled to get going as both sides found it hard going on a heavy pitch. There were a handful of half chances for each side and as the game threatened to fizzle out Dom Lawless’ goal bound shot was saved excellently by Harris with his legs to deny the Swans a late lifeline. In truth Newport’s fate and the outcome of the game were decided in a costly first twenty minutes.

The Nirvana players had something to prove in this UCL Knockout Cup Preliminary Round tie after a mediocre start to their season. Martin Sockett took the managerial reigns for the first time following the dismissal of Dave Williams after only five matches in charge. It was Newport who started brightest in the rain as they tried to take the game to Nirvana. Aftet twenty minutes the rain intensified and as the lightning lit up the sky Nirvana picked up their game. The breakthrough came when Jordan Nelson flicked the ball on for Nassor Suleiman who slotted home past the advancing keeper to open the scoring on the half hour.

The lightning storm continued overhead for the remainder of the game as the match officials seemed to be oblivious to the danger in a blatant disregard for player safety. While only seven miles away the Oadby v PNS match was sensibly abandoned after 40 minutes for “thunder & lightning”.

Both sets of players battled the appalling conditions as they tried to get a grip on the contest. The highlight came for the Swan’s in the sixtieth minute when Fazel Koriya’s cross-shot was hammered home by Dom Lawless for his 100th goal for the club. Nirvana restored their lead seven minutes later when a hard shot from Jordan Nelson crashed against the crossbar, Chris Hollist was quickest react as he drove the ball into the back of the net for the winner.

Newport had a couple of good penalty shouts turned down but failed to sustain any real threat on their opponent’s goal. Even though the Swan’s would have felt that both goals were preventable, in truth Nirvana wanted the ball more and had a greater work rate as they ran out deserved winners.

Minute By Minute

3. LN – PENALTY – GOAL. A long ball from the defence sets Tendai Chitiza clear, he is clearly offside but the Assistant Referee’s flag mysteriously stays down. As Chitiza heads away from goal in an attempt to round the keeper, Mark Osborn rushes out and pushes the forward off the ball. Matthew Melbourne takes the resultant penalty, Osborn dives to his left to pull off a wonderful save only to see the ball sneak in off the post.

6. NP – A beautiful passing move from back to front sees Scott Mulkern, Greg Ling and Dom Lawless combine well. Lawless shoots wide.

8. LN – Tendai Chitiza picks up a long ball before shooting wide.

11. LN – Good work from Will Gonga as he runs along the edge of the area before shooting into the arms of Mark Osborn.

14. LN – Will Gonga shoots well wide with a long range effort.

16. LN – A classy one-two between Reece Morris and Tendai Chitiza sees Mark Osborn collect a weak shot.

20. NP – Dom Lawless sets up Liam Smyth who has his shot blocked by Sean Doy.

22. LN – Will Gonga threads the ball through to Tendai Chitiza who is denied as Mark Osborn slides out to collect the ball at the striker’s feet.

23. NP – A pin point pass from Rob MacDonald finds Dom Lawless, James Flinders saves the shot.

28. NP – Fazel Koriya’s shot is high over the bar.

30. LN – Reece Morris collects a direct pass from defender Ryan Calver, Morris shoots high and wide.

34. LN – Keith Williams produces a good block following a strong run and shot by Pearson Mwanyongo.

35. NP – A crisp passing move between Liam Smyth, Rob MacDonald and Fazel Koriya slices open the Nirvana defence, Koriya’s shot is only inches over the crossbar.

36. LN – A weak shot from Tendai Chitiza is easily saved by Mark Osborn.

39. NP – A Fazel Koriya free kick is brilliantly saved by James Flinders.

45+2 HALF TIME – Nirvana 1-0 Swans

46. NP – Greg Ling twists and turns on the edge of the area before unleashing a shot that is saved by James Flinders.

48. LN – A world class tackle by Keith Williams denies Will Gonga. The ball falls for Reece Morris who cracks the ball goal bound only to be denied by Mark Osborn. The rebound once again falls at the feet of a Nirvana player, this time it is Matthew Melbourne who thunders a shot that is blocked by Stuart Smeathers. Rob Tapp eventually clears the ball to relieve the danger.

50. NP – Sam O’Neill’s shot is blocked by Sean Phillips.

51. LN – A long ball sets Tendai Chitiza free, his scuffed shot is collected by Mark Osborn.

61. NP – Sam O’Neill sees his curling shot go only just wide.

63. LN – GOAL. Another ball launched from defence finds Reece Morris who fires the ball to Tendai Chitiza at the far post. Chitiza makes a complete mess of the chance but the ball is sliced into his own net as Scott Mulkern slips whilst trying to clear.

71. LN – GOAL. It is Reece Morris’s turn to completely mess up a chance, mis-hitting the ball against the legs of keeper Mark Osborn, however, the ball falls nicely for Morris who does not make a mistake with his second attempt, slamming the ball home from two feet out.

76. LN – A long range shot from Matthew Melbourne is blocked by Keith Williams.

77. NP – Bruno Lobo Brito produces a wonderful pass to Sam O’Neill, his header is brilliantly saved by James Flinders.

78. LN – GOAL. A good run by Mwanyongo set up Morris to score his second of the afternoon with a low shot.

90+1. LN – GOAL. Reece Morris tries a speculative long range shot that is parried by Mark Osborn into the path of Celson Patrocinio who slides the ball home.

90+3. NP – GOAL. A good passing move from midfield between Sam O’Neill and Greg Ling to set up Josh Crawley who scores a consolation goal for Newport.

90+3.5 FULL TIME – Nirvana 5-1 Swans

High winds and heavy rain threatened to disrupt the match but both sides managed to produce an entertaining game. The scoreline bellied the action and did not truly reflect the balance of play. An uneven, bumpy pitch with incredibly long grass and atrocious weather conditions made it difficult for the Swan’s to play their passing football, however, it was perfect for the direct, long ball game that Nirvana adopt. Regardless of the pace and goals up front the stand out player for Nirvana was goal keeper James Flinders who superbly marshalled his back four, which, ultimately, enabled Nirvana to break up attacks in order to pump the ball up to the forwards.

There was a touch of good fortune with four of the Nirvana goals but they did what they do well and that is to put the ball into the back of the net. Newport, on the other hand, have great build up play but all too often the final ball is not good enough, frustratingly delivered too high to relatively short players who need the ball at their feet. If the Swan’s can remedy this area of play they will become serious contenders.

It is easy to see why Nirvana sit proudly at the top of the table but they rely too heavily on a long ball chased by front men who have pace in abundance. Even though this tactic is clearly working well this season in the UCL Premier it will be quickly found out at a higher level. Last season Nirvana were regarded by most as a complete team that played some of the best football you are ever likely to see. This year they are a poor shadow of their former selves, it is so sad to see them reduced to a team that completely bypasses the midfield.

Match Preview

Leicester Nirvana v Newport Pagnell Town
United Counties League, Premier Division
Saturday 14th November
Kick off – 15:00

Nirvana sit with a comfortable 13 point lead at the top of the UCL Premier Division, however, should Holbeach United and AFC Kempston Rovers win their games in hand they will be breathing down the necks of the Leicestershire side. The league leaders cemented their position with an emphatic midweek win over Desborough Town, bouncing back after a shock defeat to Cogenhoe United at the weekend. The win demonstrates Nirvana’s strength in that they score goals, in abundance, from all over the park. Five different players added to their goal haul in the 6-1 demolition of Ar Tarn.

A quick look at the statistics show that these are two entertaining teams and goals are virtually guaranteed when they play. The Swan’s have already found out that teams write Nirvana off at their peril. The sides have crossed paths twice in recent months with Nirvana running out victorious on both occasions. Nirvana will be wary of a Newport side that plays good, patient passing football. The Swan’s create many goal scoring opportunities themselves and but for a couple of defensive nightmares may easily have won both encounters played this season.

Leicester Nirvana manager Damion Beckford-Quailey was honoured by the UCL when he was named ‘Manager of the Month’ for September. I am sure that this will be the first of many accolades coming his way this season.

4. NP – Josh Crawley charges down goalkeeper Arron Harris’s kick, the rebound falls to Fazel Koriya who blasts his shot against the underside of the bar only to see the ball bounce down onto the goal line before being cleared by a defender.

12. LN – Reece Morris runs on to a through ball before unleashing a shot that Mark Osborn saves with his legs.

14. NP – GOAL 1-0. Crawley delivers an excellent cross from the left for Koriya who rifles the ball into the net.

28. LN – Pearson Mwanyongo curls his free kick from the edge of the area harmlessly over.

32. Osborn easily saves Mwanyongo’s weak shot.

33. LN – GOAL 2-1. A Chuckle Brothers moment at the back as miscommunication between Osborn and Stuart Smeathers gifts the ball to Matthew Melbourne who simply has to tap the ball into the back of an unguarded net.

36. LN – GOAL 2-2. More shambolic defending by the Swans allows Reece Morris the space to shoot, his shot hit the post before the unmarked Ash Day thumps in the rebound on the goal line.

40. LN – With the Swan’s defence struggling to clear Morris has his shot blocked.

45. LN – With no other options available Ryan Calver strikes a 30 yard shot that sails high, wide and handsome.

62. LN – A sublime back heel from Morris to set up Melbourne, who’s hard shot is easily saved by Osborn.

63. NP – The referee is not moved as the Swans appeal for a penalty as Koriya is bundled over in the area, the ball squirms through to Crawley who’s lob is only inches over the bar.

68. NP – Smeathers is shown a straight red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity. The resultant free kick is too far out for the Morris to trouble the Newport keeper.

71. LN – GOAL 2-3. Pearson Mwanyongo’s shot comes off the inside of the post to give Nirvana the lead.

78. NP – Arron Harris somehow manages to find his way through a crowded area to punch Liam Smyth’s free kick clear.

Leicester Nirvana 2-1 Newport Pagnell
United Counties League, League Cup, Preliminary Round
Saturday 19th September 2015

Nirvana returned to winning ways to get the better of the Swans in the Knockout Cup. Both sides struggled to make their passes count in a scrappy first half Nirvana had the bulk of the chances, with most coming from quick breaks following their opponent’s misplaced passes. However, the first real shot in anger came from Jordan Nelson with half an hour played, his well struck shot was saved by Mark Osborn in Newport’s goal. Ten minutes later Pearson Mwanyongo latched onto a pass, neatly collecting the ball before opening the scoring to put Nirvana ahead at the break.

The Swan’s picked up their game in the second half and started to control the midfield. Their endeavours paid off when Fazel Koriya stuck a beautiful free kick from the edge of the penalty area to put the sides level. Within five minutes Mwanyongo had two good chances to restore Nirvana’s lead. His first shot angled across the area narrowly missing the far post. Then, after a fine run down the right wing, he was superbly tackled by Stuart Smeathers but the ball somehow managed to ricochet back into the path of Mwanyongo who tested Osborn to no avail.

The game became stretched as both sides searched for a winner, with twenty minutes remaining Bruno Lobo Brito almost put the Swans ahead when his spectacular thirty five yard drive called for an equally spectacular flying save from Aaron Harris. Three minutes later Koriya tried a carbon copy free kick to the one that he scored from but this time the shot lacked power and accuracy, allowing Harris to safely catch the ball.

Neither side were able to create any decent, clear cut chances until nine minutes from time when Jordan Nelson found himself clear in the area, his low shot evading the diving Osborn to win the tie for the hosts.
