Swans Get Season Off To A Winning Start

It did not take the Swans long to pick up where they had left off following their Emirates FA Cup victory over Huntingdon Town. Within five minutes Fazel Koriya threaded the ball through to Tom Liversedge who could only manage to shoot straight at Ollie Reynolds in the Sileby goal. Newport continued to apply pressure as they took control of the game, however, they lacked the final touch to convert their possession into goals. Sam O’Neill, Alex Marius and Liversedge combined well, only to be thwarted by Reynolds who was then called upon to claw out Koriya’s goal bound corner. It looked as if lady luck had deserted the home side when Liversedge brilliantly flicked his header on to Koriya who had his shot saved by Reynolds, Taylor Orosz put the ball back in for Koriya who managed to clear the crossbar from close range. Alex Marius, Orosz and O’Neill all had good chances before Rangers mounted their first attempt on the Newport goal when Jory Mann hit a tame shot straight to Mark Osborn with ten minutes of the half remaining. The thirty-eighth minute saw a bizarre twist when Colum Nugent headed Orosz’s cross towards his own goal, the ball somehow evaded the keeper to give the Swans a somewhat fortunate goal but well deserved lead. Sileby rallied as Collins Antubrah and Stephen Grimley had long range efforts comfortably dealt with by Osborn. In the final minute of the half Reynolds produced a fantastic save to deny O’Neill not once but twice, however, Newport were not to be denied as Yaw Ofosu’s pass split the defence to leave Koriya in space and bearing down on goal, this time the striker made no mistake as he calmly slotted home to double the lead at the break.

Newport started the second half in the same manner that they had finished the first as Koriya set up Orosz who was unable to beat Reynolds at the near post. The hosts looked dangerous as they pushed to extend their lead but Sileby showed more hunger in the second period as Grimley and Dylan Panter held the Swans wingers at bay. Rangers started to have more threat going forward as Nathaniel Ansu’s deflected shot curled narrowly past the post and Mann directed his strike into Osborn’s hands. At the other end Orosz continued to run amok as he saw a couple of shots sail wide of the mark, he then broke free to put a pin point cross onto the head of Liversedge who struck the post with his header. Within a minute Jordan Spruce sent a deep free kick into the area and it was Orosz who rose to head the ball powerfully past Reynolds to extend the lead with fifteen minutes left. James Elkington-Soan latched onto a through ball as the game entered its final stages, he side footed the keeper before passing the ball into the back of the net for a consolation Sileby goal. Considering the amount of rain that had fallen in the previous twenty-four hours this was an entertaining affair for the brave souls who endured the cold blustery conditions, and as for players wearing gloves in August… welcome to the British summer!

Emery Hits Four To Sink Sileby

Newport took an early lead at a rain soaked Willen Road and it was Saturday’s goal hero Luke Emery who opened the scoring neatly trapping a Remy Forrester corner before turning to fire home in one motion. When Darryl Smith’s free kick crashed against the upright, it was Emery who was on hand to follow up to double the lead. Smith almost got in on the act again when he headed Forrester’s corner powerfully towards goal but alert defending on the line saw the ball cleared to avert the danger. With only eighteen minutes on the clock Emery was upended in the penalty area, converting the spot kick himself to complete his second hat-trick in four days. Newport threatened to run riot as they played with great purpose, they attacked in waves, their slick passing allowing the ball to do the work in extremely difficult conditions. However, Sileby stood firm as James Goff pulled off the first of a string of good saves to deny Sam O’Neill. Goff was called on again soon after to make a wonderful flying save to prevent an Elliott Sandy goal. Sandy was frustrated once again as Harry Osborne blocked a thunderous shot. Rangers did not manage to muster a meaningful attack until the thirty-seventh minute, Swans keeper Mark Osborn made a stunning point blank save when it looked certain that Brian Farrell was about to score for the visitors. On the stroke of half time Osborn showed good hands to save a Michael Byrne free kick.

Goff made another good save early in the second period after Emery and Sandy combined well to set up Smith. Luke Stevens shooting wide from outside the area and Lewis Burgess testing Osborn from thirty yards demonstrated that Sileby were going to compete better after the break and the introduction of Nathaniel Ansu provided a new dimension to Sileby’s play. Newport continued to press and pass well and Smith showed some sublime skills, twisting and turning before curling his shot narrowly over the bar. Dom Lawless was full of running as he raced down the touchline to put a pin point cross onto the head of Emery, Goff saved the initial attempt but could not prevent Emery helping himself to his fourth goal of the night. Rangers came close to a goal when Ansu knocked the ball past Osborn only to see Ollie Wilkinson clear his goal bound shot. Smith then added a fifth as his well struck shot proved too strong for Goff who managed to get a hand to the ball but could not stop it crossing the line. Within a minute the scoring was completed when Lawless chased a through ball, his persistence paying off as he managed to net the Swan’s sixth. Deep into added on time Dave Baker was dismissed and Luke Stevens blasted the resultant free kick over the bar.

90+3.5 Full Time: 2-2

Once again these two sides had to battle through near gale force winds to play a match that provided good entertainment for the spectators. Sileby played with the wind largely at their backs in the first half and they managed the conditions well. The flight of any ball hit at pace was entirely unpredictable and this proved costly to the Swans as both Ranger’s goals had an element of wind assistance about them. The first came after a massive free kick from the halfway line caused enough confusion in the Newport defence for Sileby to capitalise with a well taken goal from Stuart Macmichael. The second had more than a touch of good fortune as the ball swirled unpredictably when Merdy Maki scored directly from a corner. However, it is great credit to both teams as they tried to play passing football, keeping the ball on the ground as much as possible. Newport refused to lay down and came back twice with well taken Dom Lawless goals. It was Lawless, looking to complete his second successive hatrick, who stepped up to miss a penalty at the end of the half.

If the first half was fairly even the second was dominated by Newport as they drove on in search of victory. It was very much a rearguard action for Rangers as they thwarted attack after attack. Sileby’s own attacking ambitions where largely forgotton when, with half an hour left to play, their task was made even harder with the avoidable dismissal of Troy Johnston for two silly yellow cards. There was some impressive defending from the back four as Newport laid siege to Ranger’s goal. Robert Russell came to their rescue with a fine save from a second Dom Lawless penalty in the last minute which appeared to have secured a point. The Swan’s were not quite finished and it was the woodwork that finally denied them all three points as a Keith Williams header agonisingly crashed against the crossbar.

The Swan’s bounced back after a heavy weekend defeat to take all three points from a plucky Sileby side. Extremely strong winds threatened to hamper the match, however, both teams managed to play some good football. Sam O’Neill provided an excellent cross for Fazel Koriya to thump home the only goal of the game midway through the first half. There could easily have been more goals as both sides were denied by the woodwork on more than one occasion. Sileby pressed well in search of an equaliser and will feel that their low league position will become a thing of the past if they have a little more luck in front of goal.
