Swans Give Burnham The Blues

Burnham came into the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Trophy Quarter Final as the bottom side of the Hellenic League Premier Division having lost 8 and won 2 of their last 10 matches, however, their form had improved with their 2 wins coming in their last three matches. In contrast Newport Pagnell were unbeaten in their 7 matches played in October. However, it was Burnham left Willen Road still looking for their first win, in any competition, away from The Gore this season. The Swans cruised to a relatively easy victory over The Blues, their experience shone through as they were better all over the park. The hosts were gifted the lead after only five minutes when Chris Tierney inadvertently headed Stuart Smeathers’ cross into his own net. On fourteen minutes a beautifully threaded pass from Scott Mulkern to Greg Ling who, in turn, set up Dom Lawless who doubled the lead. Just over half an hour in, Lawless thundered the ball against the post following a sublime one-two with Sam O’Neill. Within a couple of minutes Darryl Smith got onto the end of a Liam Smyth free kick, stumbling as he controlled the ball before neatly scoring the Swan’s third. Almost immediately Smith was denied his second when Samuel Szymcyzk saved superbly with his legs.

Within four minutes of the restart Lawless scored his second and Newport’s fourth, heading home Sam O’Neill’s corner. Three minutes later Lawless came close to a hat-trick as he latched onto a pin point pass from Smith, he beat two players before striking the post for the second time. The Blues pulled back a consolation goal in the sixty-eighth minute when Glenn Gabriel cleverly slipped the ball through to Seun Odusanya to score. With twenty minutes left on the clock Lawrence Moyo was harshly shown a straight red for denying a goal scoring opportunity. The Swans took their foot off the peddle and Burnham saw a lot more of the ball although they struggled to create any worthwhile opportunities. Newport continued to press forward sporadically and came close to a fifth when Glenn Gabriel cleared Dave Baker’s powerful header off the line. In the dying moments Smith spun a wonderful diagonal pass to Lawless who struck the post for the third time in the match. The Swans progress to the semi-final where they have been drawn at home to play the winner of the Binfield v Windsor quarter final.
