St Andrews Put To The Sword
Newport were straight onto the front foot when, in the first minute, Harry Stratton passed from the left wing to Taylor Orosz who set up Josh Winters who volleyed wide. Ryan Elliott claimed a Luke Emery header before St Andrews broke away, Lewis Turland picked the ball up in midfield, turning and shooting over from twenty-five-yards. The Swans opened the scoring when Stratton found Emery in space, he side stepped the keeper before finishing from close range. Newport were looking dangerous up front, however, they failed to capitalise when Alex Marius and Fazel Koriya had shots blocked as the St Andrews’ defence threw their bodies on the line time and time again. In a frantic period towards the end of the half, Stratton forced a good save out of Elliott and Marius struck the ball wide of the mark. St Andrews responded, Matthew Baird breaking into the penalty area and squaring the ball to Kyrie Foster who hit his shot straight at Mark Osborn. Orosz came close to doubling the lead in the dying moments when his shot was blocked, he was first to the rebound only to be denied by a full-length diving save from Elliott at the far post.
It took the Swans less than ten minutes to double their lead, Emery’s low shot across goal evaded Elliott’s grasp as it went in off the post. Within three minutes they put the result beyond doubt, Emery went on a mazy run, beating three players before crossing the ball for Koriya to tap in the host’s third goal. Almost straight from the restart, Newport won the ball, Koriya chased a through ball but Elliott was alert and was quickly out to avert the danger. In a carbon copy incident, Foster broke from midfield for the visitors, only to be denied as Osborn advanced quickly to save at the striker’s feet. The final goal capped a period of lovely football from the Swans as they crisply passed the ball around the park, the move ending with a pin point Ollie Wilkinson centre that Emery rose majestically to powerfully head home, completing his hatrick in the process.
