Swans Notch Up The Points

This was Boston’s first league match of the season and they had high hopes of improving upon last season’s disappointing 20th place finish. During 2016/17 their away league form was better than their home form, with only two league victories to their name at the DWB Stadium. Boston had the first chance when Will Britton shot into the side netting during the opening exchanges. Newport threatened when a Fazel Koriya corner was punched straight to Alex Marius who had his shot blocked as the game became quite frenetic. Craig Parker’s excellent centre was poked over the bar by Ben Davison as the sides took turns to attack. Newport came close when Jordan Spruce’s free kick was flicked on by Taylor Orosz to Koriya who half volleyed the ball straight into the grateful hands of keeper James Lambley. With half an hour gone Tom Liversedge and Jason Field contested the ball in midfield, leaving Field in a crumpled heap, the Referee consulted his Assistant resulting in Liversedge receiving a caution for use of the elbow. The incident forced Field to be substituted and the state of his face after the game suggested the punishment was lenient. The remainder of the half lacked quality as both sides struggled to retain the ball for any great length of time, however, this was mainly due to the high work rate of the defences who broke up moves in the final third with relative ease.

The second period continued in the same manner as the first, both sides had half chances, Fraser Bayliss with a volley narrowly wide of the mark for the Poachers and Orosz flashing a shot across the face of the goal for the Swans. The game was settled in the sixty-third minute with a top-drawer finish when Orosz found Marius who wrong footed one defender before powerfully rifling the ball home for the only goal of the game. The goal settled the visitors as they started to control the match, retaining more possession and creating more threatening moves as they pressed for another goal. A second elbowing saw the Swans Yaw Ofosu floored but the incident was completely missed by the officials. As Newport pushed forward they became susceptible to quick counter attacks from the Poachers who squandered numerous corner kicks as they failed to penetrate the Newport’s outstanding defence who weathered the storm. The host’s best chance came with ten minutes remaining when the impressive Aaron Eyett forced a good save out of Mark Osborn. Newport were also denied by a good save from James Lambley after Josh Winters and Orosz combined well. After the match a delighted Darren Lynch said, “Boston is always a hard place to come and get 3 points, but after breaking our hoodoo last year here and the way we have played in the first 2 games I was confident if we carried on with our form we could get a win!”.

Cuckoos At The Double

This was a contest between two of the League’s in-form teams and it was Yaxley who came out on top to complete the league double over the home side, winning by the same margin as in the previous meeting in January. The hosts had a selection headache prior to the match as they were forced into a number changes with Mason Coleman and Taigan Brooks making their first appearances for the Swans first team this season. After five minutes Elliott Sandy’s half-volley forced a save out of visiting keeper Ollie Sutton. Shortly after Dan Cotton fired over for the Cuckoos after picking up a loose ball. Both sides were reduced to half chances, Darryl Smith headed Sam O’Neill’s corner onto the roof of the net for the Swans and Wayne Norris rose to head a Cotton free kick wide of the mark for Yaxley as the sides struggled to break each other down. The crowd witnessed a poor half of football with Sandy’s early shot the only effort on target during the first period.

After the break Yaxley came out with more energy as Newport started to look a little jaded. Cotton blasted his shot wide after having been played in by Joe Butterworth, the resultant goal kick was poorly cleared and Matt Sparrow found himself alone on the edge of the six-yard box, his shot flew across the area with the goal beckoning. It wasn’t long before another hashed clearance fell straight to Liam Hook, this time the ball was smashed into the net off a stricken defender to open the scoring. Ten minutes later Newport were caught on the break, the Cuckoos doubled their lead as Sparrow squared the ball for Kyle Norton to side foot home. The Swans responded well, within a minute Dom Lawless laid the ball back for Smith who failed to keep his shot down. Norris threw his body on the line to superbly block O’Neill’s driven shot. Yaxley then squandered two golden opportunities to put the game out of sight, the first saw Sparrow denied from three yards out by a wonderful point blank save by Mark Osborn. Then Sparrow latched onto a through ball, he raced on to fire away a shot that was once again well saved by Osborn, the loose ball fell to Phil Stebbing who only had to slot the ball into the open net but somehow managed to find the side netting. Newport had two late Liam Smyth free kicks that found their intended targets but neither header troubled Sutton.

Summary

It was a smash and grab raid as the Doughboy’s took all three points to put them top of the table. The Swan’s started brightly, making a couple of half chances before Wellingborough made their first strike. A long hack out of defence should have resulted in a routine clearance but somehow a miss-kick allowed Jack Wisniewski to round the keeper to open the scoring on 18 minutes. Wellingborough started to play some decent football as they exploited the gaps left behind the Swan’s front line as they pressed forward. The second half was largely a rearguard action as Newport piled on the pressure. Another long clearance found Deven Ellwood who calmly slotted home to double the Doughboy’s lead. Dom Lawless restored hope with a 79th minute consolation goal. Some determined and sometimes desperate defending maintained Wellingborough’s advantage as Newport probed for an equaliser. The Doughboy’s held out for the win that took them to the top the Premier Division.
