Cuckoos At The Double

This was a contest between two of the League’s in-form teams and it was Yaxley who came out on top to complete the league double over the home side, winning by the same margin as in the previous meeting in January. The hosts had a selection headache prior to the match as they were forced into a number changes with Mason Coleman and Taigan Brooks making their first appearances for the Swans first team this season. After five minutes Elliott Sandy’s half-volley forced a save out of visiting keeper Ollie Sutton. Shortly after Dan Cotton fired over for the Cuckoos after picking up a loose ball. Both sides were reduced to half chances, Darryl Smith headed Sam O’Neill’s corner onto the roof of the net for the Swans and Wayne Norris rose to head a Cotton free kick wide of the mark for Yaxley as the sides struggled to break each other down. The crowd witnessed a poor half of football with Sandy’s early shot the only effort on target during the first period.

After the break Yaxley came out with more energy as Newport started to look a little jaded. Cotton blasted his shot wide after having been played in by Joe Butterworth, the resultant goal kick was poorly cleared and Matt Sparrow found himself alone on the edge of the six-yard box, his shot flew across the area with the goal beckoning. It wasn’t long before another hashed clearance fell straight to Liam Hook, this time the ball was smashed into the net off a stricken defender to open the scoring. Ten minutes later Newport were caught on the break, the Cuckoos doubled their lead as Sparrow squared the ball for Kyle Norton to side foot home. The Swans responded well, within a minute Dom Lawless laid the ball back for Smith who failed to keep his shot down. Norris threw his body on the line to superbly block O’Neill’s driven shot. Yaxley then squandered two golden opportunities to put the game out of sight, the first saw Sparrow denied from three yards out by a wonderful point blank save by Mark Osborn. Then Sparrow latched onto a through ball, he raced on to fire away a shot that was once again well saved by Osborn, the loose ball fell to Phil Stebbing who only had to slot the ball into the open net but somehow managed to find the side netting. Newport had two late Liam Smyth free kicks that found their intended targets but neither header troubled Sutton.

Swans Falter In The Cuckoos Nest

Newport have not won a league match at Leading Drove since the 2012/13 season and it was to be an unlucky hunting ground once again as the home side took the honours on a cold afternoon in Cambridgeshire. The opening goal of the game came in slightly fortunate circumstances; when Dan Cotton took a free kick from the left-hand touchline it appeared to be harmlessly drifting behind for a goal kick but the ball kicked off the artificial surface, took a deflection and found its way past the wrong-footed Mark Osborn and into the back of the net. There were no complaints from Cotton as he gratefully claimed the goal to add to his impressive tally for the season. Both sides continued to play some good football in the middle of the park without converting their moves into any meaningful goal threat as the game became quite flat.

The second period continued in the same fashion with both sides overplaying passes and failing to gauge the pace of the ball. Jack Saunders stood out as the player of the match, running endlessly and showing some good footwork. Newport stepped up a gear in the final third of the match as they pushed for an equaliser but stout defending by the Cuckoos thwarted many promising moves. Deep into added on time the Swans keeper advanced up the pitch to add fire power to a last gasp corner, the ball fell kindly for the Cuckoos who quickly played the ball up field for Liam Hook, with Osborn now stranded in the middle of the park Hook had the easy task of putting the ball into the back of an empty net. Overall this was an even contest that could easily have gone either way, however, it was Yaxley who converted their chances and managed a clean sheet, claiming all three points in the process. Ultimately the Swans were the architects of their own downfall conceding two goals with some uncharacteristic sloppy defending.
